Fees & Policies

Wellness Associates is an out-of-network provider, which means we bill clients directly rather than accepting insurance. We offer an income-based sliding scale fee structure so that cost is not a barrier to care — please call us at 914-428-4745 to discuss fees based on your financial situation.

Fees & Policies | Wellness Associates

Our fees

Because we are an out-of-network provider, clients are billed directly at the time of service. Please call us at 914-428-4745 to have a confidential conversation about our fees. We're happy to answer any questions about our rates before your first appointment.

Sliding scale

We never want cost to be a barrier to getting the care you deserve. A sliding scale fee may be available for those who qualify based on income — call us to talk through what works for you: 914-428-4745. Rates are determined on a case-by-case basis.

Out-of-network benefits

While we do not accept insurance directly, some insurance plans offer out-of-network mental health benefits. After payment, we provide a superbill for you to submit to your insurer — but you'll need to contact them directly to ask about your coverage.

Questions to ask your insurance company

Not sure what your plan covers? Here are helpful questions to ask before starting care.

  • Is preauthorization required for mental health or behavioral health services?
  • What is my annual deductible for mental health services, and have I met it?
  • Does my plan cover a limited number of sessions per calendar year?
  • Am I responsible for a co-insurance payment, and if so, what percentage?
  • What is the typical reimbursement rate for outpatient psychotherapy in my area? CPT 90834

Why don't you accept insurance?

We get asked this every single day. As a private pay practice, we believe this model allows us to provide better, more personalized care. Here's why.

  • 1
    Reduced ability to choose

Most insurance companies offer limited options for mental health coverage. To be covered, you must explain to an insurance representative — who may not be a mental health professional — why you need services. They determine whether you're covered and offer a predetermined number of sessions (8–10 on average). You're given a limited list of providers and a limited time to accomplish your goals.

  • 2
    Pre-authorization and reduced confidentiality

Insurance typically authorizes only a few sessions at a time. When those are up, your therapist must justify the need to continue — and sometimes additional sessions are denied, ending the therapeutic relationship before goals are met. Confidentiality cannot be guaranteed when an insurance company requires information to approve continued services.

  • 3
The impact of a psychiatric diagnosis

Insurance companies require a formal mental health diagnosis for reimbursement. This can affect you in ways that extend far beyond therapy: it may impact your ability to obtain life or disability insurance, appear in court proceedings, or be required to disclose when applying for certain jobs, financial aid, or permits. A diagnosis on your record has real-world consequences that you deserve to understand before it's assigned.

  • 4
We wouldn't be able to offer reduced fees

By operating outside of insurance, we're able to offer services at a variety of rates — including significantly reduced rates — to meet the needs of all clients. Insurance companies dictate what we must charge, and deviating from that is considered fraud. Accepting insurance would eliminate our ability to offer flexible, income-based pricing.

  • 5
    Less time with clients

The administrative burden of processing claims, defending treatment plans, and sending documentation to insurance companies is significant. That time is better spent with you. Our focus is on helping you feel better — not on satisfying an insurer's requirements.

  • 6
Our clients deserve control over their care

Without the constraints of insurance, you're not limited to a specific provider, a predetermined number of sessions, or a required diagnosis. You can focus on learning new skills, developing coping strategies, and deepening your self-awareness — at your own pace, on your own terms.
